Combining the best of cartoon humor with wildly imaginative narrative, Three Tales of the Merry Mariner and the Intrepid Family Wicklow is a fun and beautifully produced volume. The Wicklow family lives aboard a ship called the Merry Mariner, and they spend their days sailing to new and exciting places.
Life aboard a ship is a lot of fun, but things don’t always go according to plan. For example, sometimes the wind won’t blow, and the ship becomes stranded in the middle of the ocean while everyone on board slowly goes mad. On other days, the whole crew may get stung by a vicious flying tarantula and end up paralyzed, green, and frothing at the mouth. And then there are the days when you get into an argument with a grumpy toll troll and all your supplies go rotten. Still, it’s all worth it to be able to sail the seven seas and have incredible adventures in exciting new lands!
The stories themselves are gently comical, celebrating STEM and a love of knowledge while taking readers on an exciting journey through imaginative, make-believe lands. Comic-style illustrations bring the narrative to life and add depth, with appendices offering recipes, diagrams, and encyclopedia entries to accompany the stories. Just flawed enough to be endearing, the characters are easy to relate to, and readers are sure to enjoy the scrapes and difficulties they get themselves into and out of. Best of all, readers can explore even more stories and world information on the companion website for free.
Three Tales of the Merry Mariner and the Intrepid Family Wicklow is a fantastic read, and I can’t wait to see what comes next in the series!
