What to Expect: ADHD, positivity, emotional awareness

ADHD is a diagnosis that stands for “attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,” but maybe “disorder” is the wrong word. After all, ADHD is about being creative, adventurous, thoughtful, focused, determined, and so many other wonderful things. Sometimes, having ADHD can lead to what some people see as problems: being untidy, fidgety, or intensely emotional. However, if you can learn to see your unique ADHD personality as a gift, these things are not problems at all—they are the route to intelligence, empathy, and innovation. So, if you are feeling jittery, frustrated, too full of energy, or dreamy, know you are not a problem, and you are not alone!

A diagnosis of ADHD can be challenging for children, their families, and caregivers, as the unique personalities that emerge from ADHD often result in hard-to-manage behaviors. Written in soothing rhyming text from the perspective of an ADHD child, Hi, It’s Me! reminds readers that ADHD can be as much about exploration, creativity, and celebration as about control and management. By describing and depicting the behaviors and underlying emotions common to ADHD children, the book is instructive (for non-ADHD readers) and validating (for ADHD readers), offering empowerment through greater understanding and acceptance of this condition. Friedel’s zany watercolor illustrations burst with movement and fun, echoing the text’s atmosphere of celebration. A set of tips for children and parents at the end of the book provides valuable tools to help further change a diagnosis into a gift.

Overall, Hi, It’s Me! I Have ADHD is a powerful reminder that ADHD is not something you are—it’s something you have and can do what you want with.
