What to Expect: Fantasy, good versus evil, travel, girl-power, endangered animals

Krystal Winkle and the Peacemaker of Kigali is a solid start to a promising series of fantasy-adventure books featuring a powerful heroine focused on doing good and saving endangered animals.

Krystal Winkle was born during a fierce storm into a secret family legacy—the Cristalli—her birth heralded by a magnificent flash of pink lightning. From that day forward, Krystal was given the power to do virtually anything she desires, for good or evil. But the evil Cristalli Huntsmen, known as Bernard and George, have also seen the flash of lightning. They know that they must capture and kidnap the new and powerful Cristalli infant—and so begins a tale of adventure and travel.

Fast-forward 10 years to the summer of 1970. Krystal is a carefree American girl who enjoys reading, dancing, and playing the piano. While playing hide and seek with her friends, she is attacked by a Huntsman, and she unknowingly releases her powers upon him, thus learning of her family legacy. To escape further detection from the Huntsmen, Krystal and her family relocate to Africa, where Krystal discovers her affinity for animals while trying to unravel the question of who she really is.

Readers will relate to Krystal as she struggles to find her place in the world, to control her powers, and to understand how her actions affect those around her. In addition to strong characters, this book is filled with fast-paced action and entertaining magic, making it appealing to fantasy lovers and providing pure escapism.

Krystal Winkle’s adventure will help readers develop an awareness of the world around them and highlights the varied cultures of Africa. Roth-White has done a fantastic job of incorporating and educating readers about the Silverback gorillas and the dangers they face. A portion of the profits from the sale of this book will go to support mountain gorillas in the wild.

Krystal Winkle and the Peacemaker of Kigali is the perfect blend of educational and entertaining reading. It will surely be a hit with readers who will clamor for the next installment of Krystal’s adventures.

About the Author

After running her own private dental practice in southern California for 30 years, Carolyn Roth-White retired and began her children’s fantasy adventure series for middle graders featuring Krystal Winkle, a clever ten-year-old girl of mystic birth. Carolyn’s goal is to take her young reader around the world in an entertaining way by combining fantasy, an animal conservation message, and a bit of education tossed in.

Her authenticity for her series is drawn from her worldwide travel experiences and her desire to encourage young people to know about cultures other than their own. Each story takes place in a different county, showcases a different animal on the endangered species list (both wild and domestic) and merge pure magic and escapism with real-world scenes.
