What to Expect: Dogs, saving, rhyming, creativity, money habits

Milton the Money Savvy Pup- Makes Saving a Habit is a short story about a cute corgi pup learning how to be smart with the money he earns while working on Farmer Lockett’s ranch.  When payday comes, Milton wants to run and buy some bacon until his friend Molly, a fellow corgi coworker, explains that he should have a plan for his money.  She then teaches Milton about allocating his funds into three categories: giving, saving, and spending.

This book is geared toward a younger audience, but the lessons taught are invaluable at any age; even adults can use a reminder that they should save for a rainy day.  Bosse does a beautiful job of teaching this by using child-friendly vocabulary and fun rhymes to further the idea that we should focus not only on how we spend but also on using our money to give back to the community and making sure that we have some money set aside “for the future or a surprise expense.”

The illustrations provided by Meredith Lewis do an excellent job of showing readers, both those who can read the text and those who can’t, how to go about giving, saving, and spending.  The warm illustrations make the characters come alive through the use of canine body language and expressions.  Readers of all ages will enjoy the lesson and illustrations in Milton the Money Savvy Pup- Makes Saving a Habit.
