What to Expect: Grief, Traditions, Adventure, and Action

A twist on Grim Reaper mythology, The Wolf’s Curse is a novel that pulls the reader into an adventurous examination of grief, tradition, and community while ultimately providing hope.

A great white wolf is lurking and searching for somebody to take over her sacred and formidable job, but so far the search has been fruitless. A twelve-year-old boy named Gauge is the only person who can see her and because of this, his community thinks he is cursed. Gauge has spent most of his life in hiding but when he sees the wolf steal his grandpapá’s soul, he vows revenge and will stop at nothing to ensure his grandpapá reaches the Sea-in-the-Sky. He teams up with another orphan and together they unveil some secrets about the wolf, their community, and the grieving process.

The Wolf’s Curse is an incredibly thought-provoking story packed with grit and adventure that provides solid entertainment for kids. The high level of entertainment removes kids from the immediacy of death while allowing them to explore the more profound elements of life and begin processing the lifelong question that many ask: What happens to a person’s soul once they leave this world? The companionship formed between the two orphans beautifully demonstrates the importance of friendship, support, and empathy during tough times. The story’s setting, a seaside village with a Renaissance ambiance, is vividly described, making it a compelling and believable backdrop for the action.

Curiosity from young readers about the topic of death—combined with the level of action that takes place—will suck readers into the pages of The Wolf’s Curse, spitting them out on the other side seeing human connections in a whole new way. Highly recommended.
