What to Expect: Indian culture, mythology, and working together.
From the same author as Bakaasur: The Ice Cream (Maker) Monster and Holi Colors!, The Vaahana Tale is a humorous story based on traditional Hindu mythology and told in the style of an instructive animal fable.
When the deities play together, they ride in on their own Vaahana—a fabulous beast with unique and magical skills. Soon, however, the gods are squabbling about whose Vaahana is best! Is it Uluka, the owl, who can win battles with wisdom rather than brute force? Maybe the lion, Dewon, with jaws that can crush enemies with a single bite? Or maybe Mooshak, the mouse, with his astonishing swordsmanship? As the day gets hotter, so does the argument—whose Vaahana is truly the best? They fight until the sound of laughter stops them—the Vaahana aren’t fighting; they’re all playing together! The deities, now humbled, realize that it’s not who is best that is important. It’s how we work together.
For readers not already familiar with Indian mythology, the depiction of each mythological Vaahana and deity offers instruction on the Indian language, culture, and religion. At the same time, the story explores an important lesson: the comparison to others is rarely as productive as working together to make the best of each individual’s strengths. Jatkar’s signature cartoon illustrations are bursting with color and detail, bringing the Gods to life and inviting readers’ to laugh at their antics.
The Vaahana Tale is a fantastic introduction to Hindu mythology and a funny moral fable.
